Each year, CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) is conducted by the Consortium of NLUs (National Law Universities). The exam is a centralised entrance test to get admission to various Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. Around 20 NLUs participate in the admission process through CLAT. Students who are willing to get admission through CLAT must know the important details of the exam, like CLAT exam date, CLAT syllabus 2023, CLAT exam pattern etc., well in advance. These details will help them plan their studies effectively and efficiently.

CLAT 2023 will be held on 18 December 2022. Usually, each year CLAT exam is held in May. However, to avoid clashes with the board exam, the exam is being held months ahead of its usual schedule. Therefore the aspirants have less time to prepare. They need a more efficient study plan. To devise a good study plan, the aspirants must know the CLAT syllabus 2023. The syllabus not only describes the kind of questions each section will have but also mentions the important topics of a section. Even though the consortium has not laid out the syllabus for CLAT 2023 exam, our team of experts and academicians have laid out the CLAT syllabus 2023. The syllabus has come into existence with an analysis of the previous year’s examination trends and question papers. Here we will discuss the syllabus for CLAT 2023 in detail.

CLAT 2023: Exam Pattern

Before we move on to the CLAT syllabus 2023, we will look at the exam pattern of CLAT 2023. The exam pattern helps the candidates become familiar with the exam and thereby helps to maximize their CLAT score. This way, the aspirants have a higher chance of getting admission through CLAT 2023. 

The CLAT exam assesses candidates’ command of English, Logical Reasoning, General Knowledge and Mathematics. Along with this, the candidates’ speed, accuracy, comprehension and interpretational skills are also assessed. 

  • The exam is divided into 5 sections, i.e. English, including comprehension, General Knowledge and Current Affairs, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques.
  • All sections combined have 150 questions.
  • The exam duration is 2 hours (120 minutes)without any sectional timings.
  • Each correct answer fetches 1 mark, and each incorrect answer leads to a deduction of 0.25 marks. There will be negative marking.
  • The mode of examination is Pen and Paper mode.
  • The exam will include passages. These passages will be followed by a set of questions.

CLAT Syllabus 2023 

The consortium has not laid out a syllabus for the CLAT exam. It only mentions the areas that are assessed through the CLAT exam. Therefore, the following details about the CLAT 2023 syllabus have been laid out in the previous year’s question papers.

English Language
  • Students will be judged on their skills to be able to proficiently draw inferences and conclusions by challenging them through questions in the form of passages based on contemporary or historically significant fiction and nonfiction topics.
  • Questions may be asked relating to the summary of the reading comprehension.
  • Analyzing the reading comprehension deeply will help the candidates compare and contrast the different points in the passage.
General Knowledge
  • This section will include anywhere from 35-39 questions ranging from current affairs topics such as recent significant events on the domestic and global front to static GK questions from arts and culture, international affairs, historical events, et cetera.
  • This section is designed to test a candidate’s knowledge about current affairs and overall general knowledge.
Legal Reasoning

● It includes questions related to legal matters or social issues in passages followed by a set of questions.

● This section will likely consist of 35-39 questions, each designed to test the legal aptitude of the candidates appearing for CLAT.

Quantitative Aptitude

● It includes questions from various mathematics topics like mixtures and allegations, averages, percentages, ratio and proportion, et cetera from the candidates to test their familiarity with the different topics in quantitative techniques.

● This section will likely consist of 13-17 questions from various topics designed to measure the familiarity and grasp of the candidate on these topics of quantitative techniques.
